Bird of the year

The bird that I'm going to write about is the Barn Owls. Barn Owls eat mostly voles, shrews, mice and sometimes rats. Barn owls are the most widespread of all owl species and are found on every continent except Antarctica. A group of owls is called a parliament. Most owls hunt insects, small mammals and other birds. Owls have powerful claws which help them catch and kill prey.

  1. Hi Auckland,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team reading your blog from Canada where we also have Barn Owls. How cool is that?!

You've done a great job of posting both a photo and a description of these beautiful birds. Good for you!

They're a really helpful bird to have in your country where predators, like rats, are a problem for ground-nesting birds. Owls eat rats and so they help solve that problem to some extent.

Have you ever seen a Barn owl? Being birds that hunt at night, it can be tricky to see owls in action. I've been lucky enough to spot some sitting on branches of trees or in buildings some times, not often.

I hope you've had lots of time outdoors this past holiday time, getting lots of fresh air and exercise! And I hope that you're happy in your class this term, now that you're back at school. You've worked hard at these SLJ activities. Good for you!

I'll continue to read your blog.

    Cheers,

    Leslie
