TOW The 3 P's

The 3 P's are Protection , Partnership and Participation.

WALA (ABOUT) the significance of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
For this activity we had to use the 3 principle and apply it to us and how they showed it in the Treaty Of Waitangi. For example I can apply protection to me by protecting myself as a learner.

Rippa Rugby

WAL: How to play Rippa and learn Skills.

Today we had visitors from Auckland University to come teach us about Rippa Rugby. Their names were Cory and Harry. First they introduced themselves Cory is from New Zealand and Harry is from Scotland.

Learning the Skills
Our first lesson with them was doing our passing skill.
The activity that we played with them is called Rabbits and Rats.
The game helped us with our listening skills and running skills. The  way the game works is you have to split your group into two.
Name one group Rabbits and the other Rats. If your team name gets could you have to run away from the opposing team.

Next game we played is relays. In relays you had to copy what kind of run Harry is doing then pop up pass to the next person in line. The game was created to help us with our running skills.

Holocaust is remembered 75 years

Today marks 75 years since the end of the Holocaust.
The Holocaust was a period during World War Two when millions of Jewish people were murdered.
On 27 January every year people around the world come together for Holocaust Memorial Day. The day is set aside to remember all those who died or were affected in that time and as a result of other genocides.
It’s also the 75th anniversary of when the largest concentration camp, Auschwitz, was closed and its prisoners were set free.

What was the Holocaust?

During World War Two, the leader of the German Nazi party was Adolf Hitler. He ordered the murder of six million Jewish people from countries across Europe.
He did this because he wanted to try to wipe out the entire Jewish. They had done nothing wrong, they were attacked simply because of their faith.

How did the Holocaust end?

The Nazis tried to hide evidence of their crimes following World War II. Knowing they were under threat and likely to be defeated, the Nazis destroyed the camps.
The Nazis were not able to hide what they had done, though, and it wasn’t long before the world learned of the extent of the Holocaust.

Drought hits Northland

A devastating drought is currently gripping Northland.
Drought-like conditions have been worsening across the region this month. Some farmers have had to cull stock, while water and feed reserves running low.
The government said that they will put $80,000 in to help local farmers.
Northland has been dry since November, with little rain forecast for the next couple of weeks.
Whangarei’s 100,000 residents will be soon asked to cut their water use to enable water into the Far North and Kaipara communities.

Locusts are causing problems in Africa

Parts of East Africa have been hit by huge swarms of locusts.
The countries of Ethiopia and Somalia are dealing with the worst locust swarms they’ve seen in 25 years.
The United Nations (UN) has called for international help to tackle the locust invasions which are destroying millions of crops, threatening a food crisis. The crops are important sources of food for many in the countries affected.

Why are locusts such a threat?

The main concern is due to the rate at which the insects eat crops.
Locusts can travel up to 150 kilometres in 24 hours and an adult insect eats its own body weight in food each day.
Scientist say that a locust swarm the size of Paris can eat as much food as half the population of France in just one day.
It fears the numbers of the insects could multiply 500 times by June.
