SLJ Week 3 Day 5: CREATIVITY +

Activity 1: Ministry of Inspiration [4 points]
So you might have heard of the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Health, right? They are groups of people who give advice to the government. But have you heard of the Ministry of Inspiration? It sounds like fun, doesn’t it?! Well, this is a real organisation based in Nelson, New Zealand. Their aim is to get kids thinking creatively in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, maths and society (STEAMS).
The Ministry of Inspiration hosts many cool activities and events, including an Aquabot competition. Aquabots are underwater robots. Have you ever heard of them?
For this activity please watch this video about the Pasifika Aquabots competition that was held in Nelson. The students had to navigate their Aquabots around a swimming pool, collecting things and visiting different ‘islands.’
On your blog, tell us whether you would like to join an Underwater Robotics team at your school. Why or why not?
Yes
I would love to do aquabotics. If you didn't know already I do robotics at my school and at Tamaki College. Here is some links to my blog posts about it. BLOG LINK    The Underwater Robotics looks cool. Also I like to programme and code stuff like Mbots.

Activity 2: Caine’s Arcade [4 points]
Caine Monroy is a 17 year old boy who lives in Los Angeles (L.A.), California. When he was younger, he spent his summer holidays at his dad’s work - an auto parts store in downtown L.A. While his dad was working, he decided to build himself something that he had always wanted - an arcade! He built an arcade all by himself out of cardboard boxes and things that he found lying around the shop.
One day a man came into the store to buy a handle for his car and he met Caine. Caine showed him what he had made and the man was so impressed with the arcade game that he made a movie about Caine and invited all the people in L.A. to come and play the games in Caine’s Arcade!
For this activity we would like to know about your favourite game. It can be a board game, a card game, a game that you play outside with friends (e.g., rugby) or a quiet game that you play by yourself.
On your blog, tell us about your favourite game. What is it called? How do you play it?
My favourite game to play is called Touch. It is like rugby but it's touch version. It means no tackling. Here are the Touch rules
  • Game duration: Two 20-minute halves with a 1-minute half time.
  • Play starts and restarts at the center with a “tap”. This is performed by moving the ball on the ground with the foot, free from the hands, and then picking it up. Penalties are performed by the same procedure. On both a re-start and penalty the defending team must retreat at least 10 meters.
  • Six - how much players you want are allowed on the field at any one time, with any amount of reserves off the field. Reserves can be continuously substituted at any time from one side of the field. The substituting players must make contact with each other behind the sideline.
  • A try is scored by grounding the ball on, or behind, the try-line. One point is awarded in men’s, women’s and mixed leagues.
Those are the rules I remember so far.
In 2019 my school went to the cluster touch tournament and we placed 2nd.

Activity 3: Choose your own
You have now made it to the end of Week 3 and have earned the right to choose your very own scientist, technologist, or inventor who you think has changed the world. There are no right or wrong choices for this activity, so find someone who interests you and tell us about them on your blog. It could be someone from your family, church or community or someone famous that you admire.
Here are some starting points in case you get stuck:
For this activity, choose one person and read all about them.
On your blog, provide us with:
  1. The name of the person
  2. A description of the work they do/have done
  3. An explanation of how they/their work has had an impact on the lives of others

The Person I have chosen is Giovanni Battista Amici.

Giovanni studied at Bologa. After he studied there he became a professor of Mathematics at Modena . Actually the reason why I have chosen him is because of Mathematics and his creation. In 1831 he was appointed inspector-general of studies in the Duchy of Modena. A few years later he was chosen director of the observatory at Florence, where he taught at the museum of natural history.  Giovanni invented the Dipleidoscope. It has impacted the world because scientists use it to look at germs and diseases. And also can come up with antidotes and medicines.

    1. Kia ora Stephney,

Georgia here from the Summer Learning Journey. This year I am working alongside our awesome cluster manager Jordan, helping her manage both the Manaiakalani & kootuitui clusters.

Just a friendly reminder that you will only be rewarded points for your comments if they are 'positive, thoughtful and helpful'. Unfortunately this comment 'okay we get it' does not fall under our comment guidelines. Here's the link which has some excellent examples of what a comment includes https://sites.google.com/site/summerlearningjourney/cybersmart/commenting

Looking forward to reading your blog posts Stepheney :)

      Nga mihi,

  2. Kia ora Auckland,

Well done for participating in this years' SLJ programme, "Changemakers: People who have changed the world" - I like that you complete 3 activities in 1 blog post - that's great initiative! Thanks for your response to Activity 2: Caine’s Arcade

Touch is such a fun game! The good thing about Touch is that it is a safe sport with a small chance of getting any injuries since there is no full on contact. I really appreciate your blog post explaining the basic rules of the game. Did you know that Australia is currently the best in the world at Touch rugby? Maybe one day when you play for New Zealand, we can get the gold medal for once! Do you like to score tries or to set them up? I love being the playmaker and setting up my teammates for tries! By adding some bright colours or a few pictures to your blog post I think it would really catch people’s attention.

    Great mahi Auckland! :)

    Ngā mihi
