Deadly Flu

Most people who get the flu recover, but in 1918, a previously unknown strain of the influenza virus caused a global pandemic.

Worldwide, at least 50 million people died. Even in relatively isolated New Zealand, the death toll was shocking. No event had ever killed so many of us in such a short time.

Deadly Speed

The 1918 flu travelled with deadly speed. This was made worse by something else that was happening at the same time: the First World War. Soldiers had been brought together from all over the world, and they often lived in crowded, unsanitary conditions. Many also had weak immune systems, compromised by the stress of war. These two things, along with the constant movement of troops and supplies, allowed the killer virus to thrive.

Polynesian Voyages

Imagine setting sail from Hawaii in a canoe. Your target is a small island thousands of kilometers away in the middle of the Pacific Ocean — a body of water that covers more than 160 million square kilometers. For thousands of years, Polynesian navigators managed voyages like this without the help of modern navigational aids. How did they do it? Alan Tamayose and Shantell De Silva explain.

For Whom The Bells Tolls

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia.

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

" No Man is an Island"
The phrase 'no man is an island' expresses the idea that human beings do badly when isolated from others and need to be part of a community in order to thrive.

"If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less." Meaning that all humanity is one large unit created by God.

“Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

Factoring

Factoring is a financial transaction and a type of debtor finance in which a business sells its accounts receivable (i.e., invoices) to a third party (called a factor) at a discount. A business will sometimes factor its receivable assets to meet its present and immediate cash needs.

Here are Examples

6 = 3 x 2   and 6 = 1 x 6 so,
factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, 6

9 = 3 x 3     and 9 = 1 x 9    so, factors of 9 are  1, 3 and 9 Common Factor Definition (Illustrated Mathematics Dictionary)

The Queen’s message of thanks, hope and resilience

The Queen has given her fifth national address of her reign. She spoke to the United Kingdom, and the Commonwealth, about the coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic.
She delivered her message in Windsor Castle’s White Drawing Room, with just one camera operator who was dressed in full protective equipment.
She praised the NHS and other key workers for all they are doing at this difficult time. She thanked people who are staying home and not seeing their loved ones in a bid to stop the spread.
She finished by looking to the future, saying “better days will return” and that we will all be with the people we love soon.Queen, elizabeth ii,queen elizabeth ii,monarch, royalty - free image ...

+ Positives & Negatives -

Positive & Negative Numbers

Numbers can either be positive or negative. Often brackets are put around negative numbers to make them easier to read, e.g. (-2). If a number is positive, the + is usually missed out before the number. So 3 is really (+3). Adding and multiplying combinations of positive and negative numbers can cause confusion and so care must be taken.
I am going to teach you how to solve a simple Equation.
3 + (-2)
A plus and a minus make a minus, so this is the same as
3 - 2 =

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

- By Thomas Edison

I really like this quote because it talks about Resilience. I don't see my self as a resilient person. But I strive to become one. "
The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." That means when you fail , tell yourself just try one more time.

The Pyramid Of Djoser, Egypt's Oldest Pyramid, Restored To Its Former Glory

After an extensive 14-year, $6.6 million restoration, Egypt's oldest pyramid was reopened to the public on March 5, 2020. Located in the Saqqara necropolis, northwest of the city of Memphis, the Pyramid of Djoser was built 4,700 years ago as a tomb for Pharaoh Djoser, the first king of the 3rd dynasty (2650–2575 BCE). The massive pyramidal funerary complex was neglected for centuries and almost on the verge of collapse before Egyptian officials finally decided to take action in 2006 and bring it back to its former glory.
