Miracle on the Hudson

SLJ Week 1 Day 2 : Activity 3

Mr Chesley Sullenberger, or “Sully” as he was known, was an airline captain (pilot) for about 30 years. In 2009, he became world famous when he landed his aeroplane in the middle of the Hudson River in New York City. He was forced to make an emergency landing when both of the engines in his aeroplane lost power. Amazingly, all 155 people on board the A320 plane survived the landing. This incredible event became known as the ‘Miracle on the Hudson.’
You can watch a video about it here.
Although Sully must have been scared when the engines lost power, he didn’t show it. Instead he stayed calm, and saved the lives of everyone on board. What a brave man!

For this activity, we would like to hear about a time when you, or someone you know, was brave like Sully.
On your blog, recount a time when you (or someone else you know) did something brave.

I have not done anything heroic. But I have seen one guy on the News. So a man was at a subway. These teenagers were playing and they accidentally hit an old lady onto the rail. He heard the train. He ran down and got the lady.

  1. Talofa lava Auckland,

Congratulations on finishing the 2019/2020 Summer Learning Journey!! You are an absolute star :)

What an inspiring story, it is so nice to know that there are amazing people like this brave man that would risk their lives for others. This is the true meaning of caring for others and treating others as you want to be treated. The other thing is that I don’t think this brave man expected to receive anything in return for his selfless actions which made it that much sweeter!! I am sure that you have been brave at least once in your life, bravery can take place in the most random places and at random times.

I had a brave moment last week when I fell into the water off a sea biscuit with a little kid and I had to swim back to the boat carrying the kid with me since he didn't know how to swim properly. As someone who can’t swim properly, I found it very challenging but I am glad it happened because I wouldn’t have pushed myself to try swimming properly. We ended up getting back to the boat safely and calmly :)

Look forward to reading more of your blog posts, Auckland! :)

    Malo,
    Mani
